How do I get a fade/ombre dyed hair effect?

do most hairdressers do it? is it expensive/hard to maintain?
i currently have dark brown below-shoulder length hair and i’d love to have it fade to a light brown at the tips, any advice is loved. 
I fairly certain her method involves just not having her hair coloured for several months. But any hairdresser will be able to do this look for you. It should be no more expensive than a general colour would be and no it’s easy to maintain because you never have to worry about regrowth!
